but 40k had the exact same issues of outdated / already owned models? eldar didn't get updates for years, same with dark eldar. lots of factions in 40k go without for long periods of time. I remember it took years for IG to get a new codex. unless you were a space marine player you were with the same models for years? Cadians only recently got updated, so by this theory, people should have not been buying the old cadian models for years 'because they owned them' or they were simply too old.

More Warhammer Fantasy, pretty please!

I get that aos models are a ton better because GW is richer and has better machines now. I also get that AOS makes great sense from a tabletop perspective, with the flashy high fantasy style where you can basically do whatever. Thats how a mtg player would see it since theres no(halfway decent) lore there to speak of anyway. But warhammer has way more lore enthusiasts than tabletop players at this point. Its also a videogame and soon movie/series franchise with tons of books. And AOS lore suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

i dont play any type of ttrpgs how ever i been playing total war warhammer , so my question is, how could you make old fantasy could appeal the casual audience and become profitable as its siblings bcs y saw some lore of fantasy hammer and i find it more interesting than 40k and the fact there were some experimental subfactions like amazons or the halfings like fantasy could still be expanded

Man, I started this expensive hobby living in South America where it was just even more ridiculous to spend this amount of money for "little toys". I've heard it was expensive everywhere, but just think going into this hobby with a currency worth shit. This video got me through so many memories. I started like in 1997, with High Elves, that you prominently talk about. I jumped into the hobby mostly because I liked building WWII model airplanes, and after reading LOTR, well... the fantasy models just looked so much more interesting to paint and assemble! I think from my POV, it wasn't the lack of models. In my country Fantasy was actually more popular than 40k. And having to save so much to build your army, it was kind of nice. Until you actually played the game. A guy with an army made of 2nd hand bretonnian knights unpainted would defeat every-time every-body in the tournaments. Everybody had bretonnia. It was so unbalanced to just fill your table with knights in V formations. Balance was just terrible. Carrying your army, just to have to later fix everything that broke. And well, when changing editions, their attempts at "fixing the balance" turned into "I wasted a year of my allowance and birthday gifts and now I can only have 1 regiment of lion guards" I ended up hating GW. I discovered other miniature brands. I had no time to play WH Fantasy, but I played so much Mordheim with 3rd party miniatures in my photocopied rulebook. Now I think about GW, and although I understand better the economics that motivated the changes. (Heck, I'd probably have done the same). I do wonder how many fantasy players just moved to play with proxies just out of GW hatr3d :P

I take offense to your characterization of Stormcast Eternals as JUST fantasy Space Marines! They are actually SO much better now, because there's no hypno-indoctrination, they don't have the baggage of "only men", and they're ANY kind of hero from history! The woman who dies defending her children from a Chaos incursion? BOOM! Stormcast Eternal. The bard who tells great stories and keeps moral high while people are fighting? Stormcast Eternal. The medic who braves the plagues of Nurgle to bring healing to his contemporaries? Believe it or not, Stormcast Eternal. They also have a much MORE grimdark story than Space Marines because they can FEEL themselves losing their humanity every time they are reforged. They lose memories, they lose personality, until they become akin to automatons. In short, Stormcast Eternals are more like Einharjer from Norse mythology than Space Marines.

I begged my parents for 40k when I was a kid to no avail.. This video very much helped me understand the scene that I've missed out on and am interested in jumping into. I don't know what I'm going to buy yet, but at least I feel more informed...

Very enjoyable video. If I had been a Warhammer player, I would have started on a new army as soon as I had finished my elves. And so on. Although the game always looked great I never played as I was busy playing other systems.

Yes the kits are more expensive. But they are literally twice t th e side of the okf kits.

Even as far back as the early 2000's, Warhammer Fantasy was in huge trouble. In my college years and shortly after I actually was roommates with a GW retail manager. By extension I met several of the regional sales reps, etc. Even in say 2004-2005, Warhammer Fantasy was rarely selling at all in the proper GW retail store. In 40K the only thing equivalent was Sisters of Battle (which is why they disappeared as a faction for so long --- they went nearly a year without selling a single SoB kit). Even then at their bi-annual(?) big sales meetings (amusingly held in Vegas), the retail philosophy being pushed was similar to what it is today: get the kid with parents who'll dump $300+ in a single purchase and ignore the long-time gamers as they only buy a pot of paint, a brush, or a single blister every month. They're not wrong. The Warhammer Fantasy consumer base has always been older, more financially stable, more likely to actually fully paint and employ an army...and they don't jump ship every 2-3 weeks for a new project. They are much more 'historical' wargamers as you've stated. In that time, my buddy's GW store sold more paint/brushes/hobby stuff than Warhammer Fantasy by the dollar. That's not sustainable in any product form. Today the dream consumer is two-fold...the 23 year old redditor who got his first IT job and blows $1,000 a month on GW kits he'll never paint...or the 46 year old married IT guy who has kids out of the house and has a strong enough income to not bat an eye buying a trio of $120 tanks for his army. GW is definitely playing to the lowest common denominator. That means the games are crap, but the model releases are constant and they keep their rabid fanbase engaged and purchasing. They lose plenty of customers every time they shift or cancel or relaunch a game, but they're gaining more new people who'll gladly blow $300-400 on something they'll ditch in a year or two.

Back in the 90's... there was a budget clearance bookstore in Winchester. They managed to get a whole stack of the Talisman: Dragons tower expansion in for £10... but.. caught fire and burned down before I could buy some copies. I really just wanted those plastic dragons. Damned arsonists :P

As a fellow Historical Harry, I totallay share your fear of Warhammer getting the Amazon treatment and becoming drek.

As long as we can all agree that Fantasy was murdered in its sleep, it's a little easier to listen to the different theories of why.

I dont know if i am correct about this but you spoke about gw and paying the rent of their stores... another thing that hurts gw big nowadays (or allways) then is 3 party retailers who sell gw products immediatly 20-30% cheaper. I dont know why i should be in a gw shop when i can have the same product much cheaper from another shop. I go to a gw shop to get informed, get help, ask to play matches, get to know other people but buy nothing as the 3 party shop has everything for 20-30% cheaper. Look at the skaventide release. Gw shop price 220 euro or so, i got it for 175 euro from 3 party shop. So i have 45-50 euros for another model/box or for painting colours etc... if you summ this up over a year, i dont see a reason to buy from a local gw store, except to support them financially...

The box is designed to split down the middle and the problem gets even worse. That said, i think the box is meant to be a taster, giving the person/people who buy it the ability to try out all the mechanics: infantry, walkers, tanks and titans. The forces are relatively balanced from what ive seen so i think thats the mind set behind it.

I think GW has priced themselves out of the 'Casual' range...

Both Talisman and HeroQuest have the great advantages over many more thinky dungeon crawlers that they can be played and enjoyed by a 6 year old, chaos be dammed. However if playing with kids (or adults) do use one of the alternative game endings that cuts off the last hour plus of knowing who has won and watching them slowly grind that win out of everybody else's life.

I played Talisman exactly once in my life. Chose to play as the Warrior, whom I named Steve the S**t-Kicker. Unfortunately for me, Steve had a bit of a problem which meant that he spent the majority of the game getting smashed in the Tavern. So while the rest of the players were racing to a close fought victory, Steve was still slumped over a table in the Tavern barely able to stand let alone take on a dragon. 10/10 experience would definately play again.

Talisman is a cardboard fantasy Mario Party, it's designed specifically so autistic hardcore gamers with no sense of sportsmanship don't have an advantage against random casuals/spouses/kids, because that's the only way everybody can have fun in that group dynamic.

Nice video thanks. I'm just a "casual" observer these days, but I was surprised that you didn't mention The Lord of the Rings TTG by GW which was released in 2001. I'm working from anecdotal memory but I'm sure that would have had an impact on Warhammer. It had a superior rules system and was capitalising on recent popular interest in fantasy stuff. Lots of people came to GW to play something recognisable and LotR was a powerful magnet for old fans as well as new ones.
